Blog post 1: Start of the Journey

After returning from a well-deserved break, we started our journey on our capstone projects. However, after returning from the mid-semester break, I wanted to change my project idea 180 degrees. The project proposal that I worked on throughout semester 1 was completely related to what I wanted to do for this semester's capstone project.

When I realised I wanted to change my project idea completely, I was lost and scared. I was panicking as I thought I would be behind in class from my peers as were sticking with their original ideas. Feeling anxious, I started to do some research further on some ideas I had in mind. The final conclusion I came up with is helping students or recent graduates experiencing anxiety or imposter syndrome related to job interviews and job-related situations. While I am unsure on what technology to use, I am excited to see what the next few weeks of planning brings me.

Facts

I am currently in the empathise phase of the project, gathering information on how this project can come together like a puzzle. My project will use AR-driven feedback and AR environments to make the users feel as if they are actually in an interview. Using Figma, I will create an application that is easy to access.

Feelings

The current challenge I am experiencing is the feeling of anxiousness as I still have to do a lot of research. My new project will have nothing in common with the old project that I initially planned to do. However, while feeling anxious, I still felt excited about my new project, as I have also experienced and struggled with or still am struggling with.

Findings

This new research topic stuck with me as interviews are something we want to avoid, but they are inevitable for all of us, so it is important to overcome these fears. While I feel that I could have stuck to my past research project, it would have been a struggle as it would have been outside of my project scope and would have had many limitations. Even though this focus on anxiety is a big commitment it will help me in the long run.

Future

To resolve the feeling of anxiety about having to start a new project, I will spend the whole week researching and searching for tools and information that are helpful for my new project. I will also work further on refining my timeline to get a better idea on what I need to do step by step It helped me learn as a designer that I have so much freedom, and sometimes it is okay to start from scratch. It felt good to step outside of my comfort zone and do something new which I have also learnt from this project. In the future, I will not be scared and wait until last minute to change my idea.

Design 301 is a capstone course where we will be creating and designing a project on our chosen topics. Our journey to create our final project starts here!

Overall, I am feeling excited about the endless possibilities that there is to come and the final project that I will be creating. Sometimes it is important to take a step back and breath! Everything will be okay.
